As the affiliated hospital of the oldest university in the continent, University of Santo Tomas Hospital has a history worthy of two medical institutions. It may have just crossed the 75-year mark, but its roots trace back to more than 400 years ago during the Spanish colonial times. In 1577, King Alfonso XIII decided that the medical students of the University of Santo Tomas would train at the San Juan de Dios Hospital. Eventually, nursing and physical therapy students would follow suit and perform their practicum at the esteemed hospital.

### Charity Care

University of Sto. Tomas Hospital was officially established in 1945. What sets it apart from other medical centers is its binary concept. It has two components, the Private and Clinical Divisions. The former treats patients like a private hospital, while the latter provides indigent patients medical services at affordable rates. The discounted prices are partly thanks to the lack of professional fees from doctors. To help fund the equipment and resources at the Clinical Division, the hospital uses the proceeds earned from the private branch.

As a testament to its commitment to charitable causes, the University of Sto. Tomas Hospital operates the Ambulatory Care Services (ACS) Department. The ACS, which sees 500 patients every day, provides affordable surgical and therapeutic services to its patients. The medical center also runs the Outreach and Indigency Program, which offers free screenings, diagnostic tests, and education.

Due to its charitable services over the years, UST Hospital has been recognized for its generous programs. It received the Corporate Social Responsibility of the Year Award from 2019 to 2020 at the Health Care Asia Awards.
