In 1950, the Philippines was still recovering from the aftermath of World War II. It was a time of inadequate medical facilities and high mortality rates, especially when it came to childbirth. Cardiologist Dr. Ramon D. Atienza Jr. and OB Gynecologist Dr. Felicidad Calip-Atienza, a married couple, saw the need for a quality maternity hospital and founded the St. Jude General Hospital and Medical Center.
From its humble beginnings as a clinic with a 12-bed capacity, the St. Jude Hospital Manila developed into a full-fledged medical institution. A decade after it opened its doors, the hospital established a training ground to prepare future generations of medical practitioners. It also added various extensions like a Dental Department and an Ambulatory Care Center to meet the different medical needs of Filipinos. After all the success it has garnered throughout the years, the medical center remains a family-owned hospital.
Awards
St. Jude Hospital and Medical Center has been recognized for its excellence in maternity services throughout the years. The University of the Philippines and the Department of Health have honored the institution for its outstanding newborn screening program. It was also awarded the Center of Quality status by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth). The distinction means that St. Jude Hospital Manila has met the core medical standards and performed above average in metrics like leadership and environment.
