Before becoming an established medical center, Mary Johnston Hospital (MJH) initially opened as Dispensaria Betaña in 1906. It was a humble clinic housed in a small room with minimal resources. At the helm was Dr. Rebecca Parish, a missionary doctor from the United States.

In 1908, MJH moved to its present location from Sta. Cruz, Manila to Tondo, Manila. Thanks to the generous donation of Daniel Johnston, who wanted to honor his wife, Mary, the clinic was upgraded from a small room into a two-story structure with a 55-bed capacity.

Today, Mary Johnston Hospital is one of the many hospitals that fight against COVID-19. As a testament to its charitable beginnings, it offers discounted prices for its COVID-19 services.

### Accreditations

The medical center boasts a Level 3 accreditation, the highest level a hospital can receive, from the Department of Health (DOH). The status means that MJH has fully-equipped intensive care units and specialized services like physical rehabilitation as well. The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation has also recognized Mary Johnston Hospital as an accredited human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment facility.
