Canossa Health and Social Center Foundation, Inc. in Tondo, Manila started 50 years ago. In 1971, four nuns moved to the city to help priests in Magsaysay Village's San Pablo Apostol Parish. A few years later, they transformed one of the rooms in their humble apartment into a small clinic after seeing the local area’s demand for medical care service. Thanks to the generous donations of the Canossa Province and the Caritas-Miserior in Germany, the sisters were able to move to the building they use today. The structure includes medical facilities like a delivery room, pharmacy, clinic, and accommodation for the sisters and staff members.

One of the deadliest infectious diseases in the Philippines is tuberculosis (TB). According to the World Health Organization, around 70 Filipinos die every day due to TB. Recognizing the need for an accessible treatment center, the Canossa sisters made it one of their missions to help eradicate the disease in the country. Today, Canossa Health Center is recognized as the primary tuberculosis treatment facility for six barangays near the clinic. The medical center, driven by volunteers and dedicated medical professionals, follows the directly observed treatment short-course (DOTS) strategy to cure TB. It entails patients taking their medicine in the proper dosage along with their meals.

Beyond airborne diseases, another area of concern is maternity services. Figures from the Philippine Statistics Authority show that Manila has one of the highest childbirth rates in the country. Fortunately, Canossa Health and Social Center Foundation is also renowned for its birthing services. The clinic has safely delivered babies throughout its 50-year run in the area.
